Problem

I'm experiencing an issue with my Kenmore 523.9261110 freezer where it's not cooling at all. The fans and compressor are not running, however, the lights are on.

What I've Tried

  1. Checked power to unit: Tested voltage at the outlet and confirmed 120v AC.
  2. Checked power to the condenser fan: Found no power going to the condenser fan.
  3. Checked power going to the compressor: Found no power going to the compressor.

Expected Behavior

Fans and compressor should be running when the freezer is not cold enough.

Actual Behavior

Freezer is not running, but the lights are on.

Additional Information

  • Logs or Error Messages: No error messages or fault codes displayed

Question

What would cause the freezer to not run? It is an older unit, so I'm unfamiliar with the cause if no boards are anywhere on the machine.

Type: Freezer

Brand: Kenmore

Model: 523.9261110

Explanation

This issue is most likely caused by a bad thermostat.

This can be confirmed by tapping the thermostat, and/or jumping the thermostat.

Steps to Resolve

  1. Remove the evaporator panel: Remove the shelving and the back panel containing the thermostat.
  2. Test the thermostat: See if the thermostat is faulty.
    • Unplug the freezer.
    • Remove both wires going to the thermostat.
    • Use a jumper wire and create a connection between the two wires.
    • Plug in the unit, the compressor and fans should turn on.
  3. Replace the thermostat: Remove the faulty thermostat and plug in the new thermostat.
  4. Reassemble the machine: Reinstall any shelving and the evaporator panel.
  5. Test the freezer: Upon plugging the unit in, it should run the fans and compressor like normal again.

Additional Tips

  • Never leave the thermostat jumped. The machine is meant to cycle off when it is cold enough.

TLDR

Check the thermostat. Tap it and/or jump it.
