Problem

My Kenmore Washer model 110.46462501 keeps giving me an F28 error code.

What I've Tried

  1. Research: I found this error code means a communication error between the MCU and the CCU.
  2. Diagnostic Mode: When running diagnostic mode, everything seems to work okay. Water enters and drains. The tub tumbles and spins, etc.
  3. Inspection: I removed the kickplate, and saw wires hanging down and going around the rubber boot, but I don't know where. Not sure what to troubleshoot next, or where the MCU and CCU are located.

What the Washer is Doing

The washer is throwing an F28 error code during spin.

What the Washer Should be Doing

The washer should finish the cycle without any errors.

Question

What would cause the F28 error to occur, the MCU and CCU is pricey, I'd like to confirm one or both are bad before throwing money at it.

Type: Washer

Brand: Kenmore

Model: 110.46462501

Explanation

The F11 and F28 error codes happen due to a communication break in the serial link from the CCU (Central Control Unit) to the MCU (Motor Control Unit)(from the brains to the washer motor controller).

Why a Connection Break?

There are three blue wires that go to the MCU from the CCU. Most of the problems occur during the final spin when the machine spins the fastest and longest to extract all of the water.

Therefore, the most vibrations cause the connectors to shake until there is a break in the connection!

How To Confirm

Remove the top panel by removing the 3 size 20 torx screws from the back of the top panel.

The CCU is the plastic rectangle with a spaghetti of wire going into it. Locate the last set of 3 blue wires, Ensure this harness is plugged in all the way. This harness is the connection for the MCU.

Make sure the washer is completely level. Excessive shaking can cause the connection to break.

A real quick check you can do before tearing the machine apart is sitting on the machine during a final spin, the washer should finish the cycle with no errors.

If the issue ends up being one of the boards, it is common practice to start with the MCU and then replace the CCU if the problem persists. Generally, if the problem is intermittent it will be the MCU. If certain functions of the motor cause the error, it very well could be the CCU.
