Problem

I have a General Electric GDT655SSJSS dishwasher and it's not turning on. It is acting extremely finicky.

What I've Tried

  1. Checked for power at the terminal: Checked for 120v AC at where the cord is installed to the dishwasher.
  2. Reset the dishwasher: Resetting the dishwasher by unplugging it and plugging it back in worked for a while, but that doesn't help anymore.
  3. Checked door switch: Checked for continuity at the door switch to ensure there is continuity while the door is closed.
  4. Replaced main control: I replaced the main control board (P/N WD21X24901C). This only worked for a week at most.

Now I'm stumped. Did I get a bad main control or something?

Expected Behavior

The dishwasher should turn on when pressing buttons and/or when the door opens.

Actual Behavior

Absolutely nothing happens when pressing any buttons or when the door opens.

Additional Information

  • Logs or Error Messages: No error messages or fault codes displayed

Question

Did I get a bad main control or something? What other potential causes should I consider if this isn't the issue?

Type: Dishwasher

Brand: GE

Model: GDT655SSJSS

Explanation

This issue with your dishwasher is most likely caused by the UI Board.

Steps to Resolve

  1. Remove the kickplate: Remove the kickplate from the front of the dishwasher.
  2. Locate the UI board wires: You should see some wires coming from the door and plug into the main board.
  3. Check volage coming from main board: Unplug the harness and test for voltage. The voltage should be around 14v DC.
    • Ensure you're getting a good reading.
    • If you are unsure of a good reading, you may have to pull the dishwasher out and lay it down, or remove the door and check at the other end of the harness.
    • A lot of times, when the harness if plugged back in, the UI will turn on. This confirms a bad harness or board.
  4. Remove the door: Undo the harness and unhook the door springs. The door can then be lifted off of the hinges.
  5. Split the door: There will be 2 quarter inch screws at the bottom of the door. Remove those and slide the inner panel up and away from the outer panel.
  6. Test the harness: The harness is also a common culprit, now is a good time to check the wires for continuity.
  7. Replace the UI: (P/N WD21X31902). Be sure to follow the instructions included to jump the correct pins with the included jumpers.
  8. Reassemble the dishwasher: Reassemble the dishwasher, the UI should work like normal. If some or all of the buttons don't work, double check the jumper configuration.

Additional Tips

  • Be weary of the harness as well as the UI. Few models will need the main board replaced WITH the UI.
  • This is extremely common with most GE dishwashers, it's always the first thing to check.

TLDR

Check voltage going to UI. If around 14v DC, replace the UI.
