Problem

I'm experiencing issues with an Icemaker in a Whirlpool WRS321SDHZ refrigerator.

The ice maker inlet tube keeps freezing on me. Not quite sure why it's doing this.

What I've Tried

  1. Replaced Inlet Tube: I replaced the inlet tube. It has some grooves in it. I thought maybe water was getting caught and freezing over.
  2. Replaced Ice maker: I replaced the entire ice maker. The issue still persists.
  3. Lowered freezer temps: I lowered the freezer temps. Issue still arises.

Expected Behavior

Ice maker fill tube should not freeze over and prevent water from entering the ice maker.

Actual Behavior

The inlet tube for the ice maker is freezing over and not allowing water to enter the ice maker.

Explanation

The issue with your ice maker fill tube freezing over, is most likely a leaking inlet valve.

No, not leaking out onto your floor, but the valve is leaking into the ice maker because it is not closing all the way.

This is a common issue with the Whirlpool refrigerators.

Steps to Resolve

  1. Melt out the fill tube: This may involve removing the ice maker to access the fill tube.
    • I prefer using a steamer, it is faster, blow dryer works. Leaving the fridge turned off works as well.
    • The ice maker will be held in with 3 1/4 screws.
    • Be 100% sure there is no ice build-up. If the water is getting caught at all, it will build back up again.
  2. Access The Inlet Valve: Pull the fridge forward and remove the back cover where the compressor is. The water should hook up into the valve.
  3. Replace The Inlet Valve: Be sure the water is turned off.
    • Ensure the fridge is unplugged and the water is turned off.
    • Remove the inlet hose from the valve. I like using a good 'ol crescent wrench.
    • The valve will be held onto the cabinet with 2 1/4 screws. Remove those.
    • Disconnect the push-connect fittings coming out of the valve. Push them in, pull the hose out.
    • Disconnect the spade connectors on the valve.
    • Reverse the steps to install the new valve.
  4. Test The Icemaker: Pull of the cover and jump the H and T holes in the ice maker. This will force it to cycle. Make sure you have good water flow.

Additional Tips

  • Steamers help speed up the melting process and ensures no ice is leftover. This is important.

TLDR

Replace the inlet valve. It no longer creates a proper seal and is leaking into the ice maker.
