What is score? How do I earn (and lose) it?

Ask Question

Score is entirely optional

The three most important activities on Appliance Surge are asking, answering, and editing — none of which require any score at all! Please get comfortable with these core activities before expanding your participation into other areas. Score can also be earned through moderation in voting on flagged content.

What is score?

Score is a rough measure of how much the community trusts you. It's earned by convincing your peers that you know what you're talking about. As you earn a higher score, you unlock more privileges and tools on the site. At the highest privilege levels, you’ll have access to many of the same tools available to moderators, as this site is community-driven!

How do I increase my score?

The primary way to earn a higher score is by posting good questions and useful answers. Votes on these posts determine how many points you gain (or sometimes lose).

  • Question upvoted: +10

  • Answer upvoted: +10

  • Answer marked “accepted”: +15

You can earn a maximum of 100 points per day from upvotes, downvotes, accepted answers, and moderation.

How do I lose points?

You lose points when:

  • Question downvoted: −1

  • Answer downvoted: −1

All users start with zero points, and your score can drop below 0. Deleted posts do not affect your score in most cases. Additionally, any reversed votes or vote fraud will result in your score being restored accordingly.

Secondary Activities

Voting, commenting, and other moderation activities are secondary to asking, answering, and editing questions. Focus on learning the culture of Appliance Surge through these core activities, and you’ll naturally earn the privileges to do more.
